What dance styles/geres are taught at DSJ?At DSJ, our choreography is inspired by various street and commercial dance styles, set to popular music — especially trending K-pop hits. This includes: Original K-pop choreography; Re-choreographed routines tailored to be age-appropriate for children; Our teachers’ original street jazz choreography to K-pop or other pop music; Note: K-pop is not a specific dance genre but a performance style incorporating a wide range of choreography.

What is the difference between the "Basic" and "Intensive" and High-Passion"? programs?Basic Program 1 class per week, ideal for students balancing dance with other activities. Provides a steady and enjoyable learning pace, with an annual recital performance opportunity guaranteed. Intensive Program (Any combination of B1+B2; C1+C2) 2 classes per week, allowing students to learn more choreography, achieve faster technical progress, and prepare more consistently for off-studio performances. High Passion Program (Repeats two days of the Intensive Program) 4 classes per week for highly motivated students. Supports rapid development through reinforcement, helping to solidify techniques, and offers more opportunities for off-campus performances and competitions.
-
When is the Intensive Program recommended? How to select? For students with no prior experience: Only recommended for passionate new dancers. We suggest splitting the two classes across different days rather than taking both on the same day. For students with prior experience: If you feel confident handling one class per week for at least one full school year at the same grade level, you are welcome to choose either a one-day or two-day Intensive schedule. General reminder: We do not recommend new students with no prior dance experience to take both Intensive classes on the same day.
-
When is the High Passion Program recommended? After completing at least one school year with us, ensuring that our studio is a good fit for your learning style and goals. For students with strong passion but limited time or difficulty maintaining effective self-practice at home. For students with a weaker foundation but strong motivation and willingness to improve. For students with the right attitude. Since our choreography pace is faster compared to other genres, repetition is essential to polish skills. It won’t be boring but requires patience, focus, and a down-to-earth mindset.

Can my child try a class before registering for the full year?Yes! Trial classes are required for new students. Link to book:https://www.dsjdance.ca/trial-class
-
As a registered student, what should I prepare for the new school year? Here is the "back to school checklist" for helping you get well prepared for the dance class in the new school year!
-
Will my child have any opportunity to perform?Yes! All full-year students participate in our annual recital. For additional event and performance opportunities, please check the page for participation policy.
-
What if my child is shy or inexperienced? Our teachers specialize in helping children build confidence step-by-step. We do weekly small group showcases in class to check practice results and help students gradually build stage confidence. Many shy beginners become confident performers by the end of the year.
-
What happens if my child misses a class? You may request a class transfer ahead with the same content class if there are available spots. Advanced email request is required. (eg. from SatB1 to WedB1 of the same week) For occasional absences, students can review class videos and may request a free 5–10 minute individual instruction if needed. If multiple absences occur and catch-up becomes difficult, private classes can be booked at a discounted rate for registered students. Check here for the private class rate.
-
Are the dance styles age-appropriate?Yes. We adapt choreography for younger students to be fun, energetic, and developmentally appropriate while preserving the original dance style.
-
Withdrawal policy? Grace time? For withdrawal policies, please check the details on our POLICY PAGE.
-
Do you emphasize extreme flexibility training? We focus on safe and functional flexibility through progressive dance training. We do not require extreme ranges or overspilt for young students.
-
Do teachers accept dance suggestions from students?1)Dance Genre over Trends: Our focus is on teaching a complete dance genre rather than just trendy moves. We aim to give students a well-rounded system of street jazz and K-pop that extends beyond what’s currently popular. We often adapt or create new choreography that aligns with their skill level and builds strong foundational technique. 2)Age-Appropriate Content: Not all popular moves or styles are suitable for young dancers. Through years of training with us, students will gain the skills and foundation to cover any dance on their own—or even create original choreography in the future.
-
If we missed the beginning of the school year, can my child still register? If there are available spots, late registration is allowed with the requirement to book a few private lessons before joining regular group classes. We usually stop accepting new students around the Spring Break. After the Spring Break, please consider registering for the next school year.
-
Are there discounts or referral rewards?Yes! Families who refer a new student will receive a $25 thank-you after the referred student registers. Sibling discounts also apply at $25 per one additional sibling.
